The Bram Fischer Memorial Lecture is a biennial event reflecting on the enduring values of justice, equality and service to the people. It brings together leaders in the law and public life to inspire dialogue on how we continue building a democratic and fair South Africa. Bram Fischer, a lawyer of immense courage and conviction, defended anti-apartheid activists at great personal cost. His dedication to freedom, equality and the rule of law, even in the face of persecution and imprisonment, left a legacy that continues to shape our pursuit of justice today. We honour Fischer for showing that the law, when wielded with principle and compassion, can be a powerful tool for change. This year’s lecture is delivered by Justice Steven Majiedt of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. Justice Majiedt has spent his career standing for the voiceless and marginalised, from his early work defending political activists to his landmark rulings on constitutional rights. His lecture on the resilience of the law reflects both Bram Fischer’s enduring example and his own belief that the law must always serve the people.
