Linchester Mill is one of the last water-powered mills located in Preston, Maryland on the Eastern Shore. The mill was in operation from the 1680s until 1979 and still contains many of its original milling equipment from that era. The mill was an important location of the Underground Railroad as it was located amongst the safe houses of the Levertons, the Hubbards and the Kelleys, and the Ross (Harriet Tubman’s parents) in the area. The mill served a support base for information, shelters for freedom seekers and provided work for both free and enslaved African Americans. The mill is part of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway.
