What 'safety' may mean to a trauma survivor

When we are traumatised, we lose our ability to feel safe. Our neurobiology is altered, biasing us towards threat and danger. Instead, what 'feels' safe to us as trauma survivors might simply be what's familiar, what we're used to (even if it's negative), what we're in control of, what we can predict, or what we can avoid. If I'd been asked as a child if I felt safe, I would just have agreed – because I didn't know there was a different feeling to constant hypervilance and constant dread. That was normal, so that, to me, was 'safe'. Therefore, the word 'safety' might mean something completely different to the therapist than to their client. In this video I talk about the importance of the therapist being really curious, coming without preconceptions, and asking the client what their experience is like for them – to make sure that when we talk about safety, we're really talking about the same thing. ————— I’m Carolyn Spring and I’m an author, trainer, consultant and Founder of the Trauma Recovery Community. I help counsellors and therapists help their clients recover from complex trauma. Over 40,000 people have accessed my live or online training , and I’ve provided hundreds of hours of 1:1 consultations with therapists to unpick the really tricky aspects of working with complex trauma. I combine perspectives from both the clinical literature and research with the first-person insight of someone who’s actually been there, and I make the complex simple … but without ever being simplistic. I believe in hope for recovery from even the most appalling suffering … but only with the right support. I support the supporters.
