Hello friends. In the 1912 the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western railroad began building the Nicholson Cutoff. This was a new grade of an old railroad. The cutoff ran between the small Pennsylvania Boroughs of Hallstead and Clarks Summit. This was designed to straighten out the curves of the old road to allow for faster transport of freight and passengers. This was a time when many railroads were upgrading their infrastructure by building “super highways” cutting off sweeping curves that prevented trains from running faster. The Lackawanna Cutoff in New Jersey is one of the most well known of these projects. Along the Nicholson Cutoff sits two amazing Viaducts. The Tunkhannock Creek and Martins Creek viaducts are two of the most incredible sights I’ve ever seen. We are at the smaller of the two for this video. The Martins Creek viaduct is a whopping 150 feet tall and 1,600 feet long. While not as big as the Tunkhannock Creek viaduct, it’s still quite impressive. Construction took place from 1912 through 1914 and actually finished up early. The line would go into operation in November of 1915, and still continues to be used. Let’s go for a walk and check out the views. Thank you for watching. 8/2/25
