00:00 Intro 19:54 Devon-PA | Ten Commandments In Schools For Moral Framework 1:00:12 Brad-TX | Atheists Strawman Religion 1:55:58 Michael-NC | Deconversion Struggles SHOW NOTES In today’s episode of the Atheist Experience, Armin Navabi and The Cross Examiner, take a stroll over a bridge where there is a Ten Commandment Troll that they wrestle with before diving into the Abraham and Isaac river and help a person struggling with deconversion not drown in choppy waters. Devon, a troll in PA, thinks the Ten Commandments will add a moral framework to public education. Doesn’t this open the door to all kinds of things such as childhood indoctrination? Why do you think the Divine Command Theory is not the most harmful and destructive of all moral codes? There are ancient laws that predate our earliest estimate of the Ten Commandments by 500 to 800 years. Why do we need mind control within these commandments? Why can’t the commandment “You Shall Have No Other Gods Before Me” be replaced with, “Do Not Own People''? Why are the Ten Commandments better than ideas from a system such as Utilitarianism, that strives to produce the greatest good for the greatest number? After all these years of seeing what standards work, why would we ever embrace Divine Command Theory? Why would we not want to reduce harm with better systems? Asking people to control their feelings or thoughts is an insane ask. This is the thin sugar coating around the sugar pill they feed your children. Brad in TX says that atheists strawman religion and they take things out of context. Brad then tells his side of the Abraham and Isaac story. How exactly do we strawman the message of obeying god when your interpretation and ours is the same? This story teaches that what god says is more important than your feelings of empathy. Do you think it is good to always do what you think god wants? How can all the people on this planet agree on what god wants? If there is no god and afterlife, why wouldn't you agree that the consequences of this false belief would be far away from the best outcome? Why do you think a society that allows people to kill their son upon god’s command is a better society that does not allow this? If someone wants to kill their kid today, how could you tell if they are crazy or if they are right and there really is a god that told them that? We are concerned about the methodology being Divine Command. Michael in NC struggles with deconversion and being told as a child to not take the Mark of the Beast even if there was a gun to his head. You are far from alone with these struggles as they are common with people coming out of religion. We can recommend Recovering from Religion. Thank you for tuning in this week!
