Written by Tom Waits and made famous by Rod Stewart. If you haven't heard Tom Waits' original, his voice is 100 times more gravelly than Rod's 🙂. Tom wrote this beautiful but curious song about his experience of being stranded and penniless in Copenhagen. It was there he met a violinist called Mathilde Bondo, which prompted him to (in his words) "steal the Australian national song." He said it's also about being on the road, on the loose and chasing your dreams. Also about his experience with alcohol both in Copenhagen and Los Angeles. The only information I can find about Tom Traubert is that he was "a friend of a friend who died in prison." If anyone has any further information on any of this I would be grateful to hear it. As always thanks for listening and I hope I did ok 🙂🎸
