The afternoon sun hangs warm and golden over your yard, the air carrying the scent of soil and fresh-cut grass. You pause from your work, brushing dirt from your palms, when a flicker of orange drifts into view. A Monarch butterfly floats toward you, its wings glowing like stained glass lit from within—bright tangerine veined with black, dotted carefully in white along the edges. It doesn’t rush. It wavers and glides, carried by a breeze so light you barely feel it. For a breath, it hovers in front of you, as if considering. Then it lands. Its feet touch your skin so gently you almost doubt it’s there. The wings open and close in slow, deliberate pulses, fanning the warm air across your knuckles. You can see the delicate architecture of it up close now—the paper-thin wings, the slender black body, the tiny curled antennae tasting the world. Everything else seems to soften: the distant hum of traffic, the rustle of leaves, even your own thoughts. The butterfly rests, steady and unafraid, as if your hand were just another sunlit branch. You hold perfectly still, feeling the faintest whisper of movement each time it breathes and flexes its wings. And just as quietly as it arrived, it lifts—rising in a flicker of orange and black, carried back into the garden, leaving your hand warm and strangely honored by the brief, weightless trust. @Iknowenoughtobedangerousfarm
