Another of my hand-picked collections of adverts shown in the 80s and 90s here in the UK, mostly (but not only) around CITV. Of course, everyone knows the first one with its "millions of Geoffreys" misheard lyric, but do you remember that Key to the Kingdom board game? Or that Crossbows and Catapults thing? They're from right in my era, but I've got no memory of them whatsoever. Needless to say, the Pink Windmill challenge is on, though I'm not sure it's really much of a challenge at all in the recognisability stakes. (I suspect the ad itself may even originally date from the late 70s, in fact.) Elsewhere, look out for Sam Fox and Wallysaurus, a handful of companies that have since gone bust, scary Gordon Kennedy with a trunk, and R.O.B. your Robotic Operating Buddy. I really don't know what to make of that Clarks Magic Steps ad - did they ever explore that fairy tale universe further? It would have been a strange campaign if it was only a one-off. Are we okay with the second ad, or is it cruel? I know they stopped using chimps quite a while back. And what about that one selling shares in the soon-to-be-privatised water companies? It's almost chilling to see such a massive political gamble being presented like that. One last thing: that bit in the Weetabix ad where he prevents Maradona's handball goal... Have you worked out what stunning special effect they used to make the ball change direction? They simply hand-drew a new one being cleared, and then animated the player's boot flying off over the top of the real ball. Simple, but effective.
