Notes: @5:47 So I decided to include a riichi mahjong clip, but I'm not sure how many people actually play the game, so I'm going to take a bit of time to explain why Rosalyn was so incredibly lucky that round. A couple terms to note: 1) Ron - when you win a hand, you call "ron" 2) Tenpai - you're one tile away from calling ron. In this state, ANY person who discards a tile you need, you're allowed to take and complete your hand. Normally, there are strict rules about who you can take discard tiles from 3) Furiten - You're not allowed to win off a set of 3 or pair that would've been completed with a tile you've discarded previously, unless you draw it yourself. This drastically reduces your chances of winning, so it is a bad state to be in. 4) kan - 4 of a kind. If you have 3 of a kind in your hand, you can take the fourth from anyone who discards it and reveal it onto the table. If you draw it yourself, you can also call kan on that fourth tile and reveal it onto the table. There are many reasons to call kan, but it's not too important why they do it here. It's important to note that once a kan is called, those tiles can not be mixed and matched back into your hand Mahjong winning hands: Without going into too much detail, a winning hand consists of 14 tiles 4 sets of 3 and a pair Each set of three can be one of two things a) a sequence, which is like 1, 2, 3 or 7, 8, 9 (of the same suit) or b) a triplet, which is three of a kind (of the same suit) A pair is self explanatory, it's 2 of a kind (of the same suit) At 5:51 Rosalyn is in tenpai, she is one tile away from winning the round. The tile she needs is the eight of circles (There are 8 circles on the tile). If she draws this tile, or anyone discards it, she wins. Her hand is pretty bad at this point (as in it's not worth a lot), but glancing at the other players' discards it doesn't look like anyone's all that close to winning, and even if they were, it's probably not that big of a hand. There are currently 0 eights of circles in any discard pile or revealed tiles, which means Rosalyn has an okay chance to win off of this. At 5:59 The opponent to her left calls a kan on the eight of circles. The implication is that the opponent now has all 4 eight of circle tiles. This reduces Rosalyn's chances of winning down to 0%, which is why you see Rosalyn in disbelief. At 6:18 she takes in the 4 of bamboo and discards the 9 of circles. She's trying to make a new set of 3 here, and tosses out a tile that's not likely to cause anyone else to win. Discarding nine of circles is a pretty safe move in this situation. At 6:31 she takes in the 3 of bamboo and discards the 7 of circles. This is extremely lucky for Rosalyn, because she now has a new sequence and is back in tenpai. Instead of aiming for the 7, 8, 9 of circles, she's now aiming for the 2, 3, 4 of bamboo OR 3, 4, 5 of bamboo. BUT if you look at the discards, all 4 two of bamboo tiles are out, which means she can't win off 2, 3, 4 of bamboo anymore. There's also 2 five of bamboo tiles in discard, which means there are potentially only 2 five of bamboo tiles left in play that she can win off of. This is highly unlikely. The worst part is that earlier in the round, she discarded a two of bamboo herself, putting herself into furiten on 3, 4, 5 of bamboo. This means that not only are there only 2 tiles left in play she can win off of, she HAS TO draw it herself. Her chances to win are miniscule. AND she's discarding the 7 of circles, which is very dangerous. The player to the left is VERY likely looking for a 5, 6, or 7 of circles. Rosalyn throwing out the seven of circles had a high chance of giving the left player the win with a big hand. A full flush that's partially revealed is worth 5 han, AND he had 3 dora, AND he's East wind, which means his hand could easily be worth 24,000 points. Compared to Rosalyn's final hand of 2,700... ya, Rosalyn could've very easily thrown the game. Needless to say, Rosalyn got VERY lucky Source: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV18i4...
