🚨 The Hitsats Camp Tragedy: Famine, Displacement, and Reignited Political Tensions in Tigray Decades ago, Emperor Haile Selassie's indifference to the devastating famine in Tigray and Wollo fueled a revolution that ultimately ended his reign. Today, history seems to be tragically repeating itself. Recent heartbreaking footage from the Hitsats Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in northwestern Tigray has shocked the world, revealing severely malnourished children, emaciated adults, and families struggling to survive in crumbling shelters. Since 2022, over 300 people have reportedly died from starvation and lack of medical care in this single camp of 16,000 residents, with conditions only growing more desperate. The residents of Hitsats are just a fraction of the 800,000 Tigrayans forcibly displaced from Western Tigray during the brutal 2020-2022 civil war. While the 2022 Pretoria Peace Agreement promised a safe return home, unresolved territorial disputes and ongoing security threats have left these vulnerable citizens trapped in over 90 overcrowded, under-resourced camps. This escalating humanitarian catastrophe is the result of a complex web of political negligence and international aid disruptions. A massive aid suspension by the World Food Programme (WFP) following widespread theft allegations, combined with severe cuts to USAID funding, has left millions without a safety net. Compounded by severe droughts, over 60% of children under five and 70% of pregnant and nursing mothers in parts of Tigray are now facing acute malnutrition. Furthermore, a staggering majority of these displaced individuals are suffering from untreated PTSD due to the trauma of the war. Meanwhile, political leaders from the Federal Government, the TPLF, and the Tigray Interim Regional Administration (TIRA) continue to point fingers rather than provide urgent solutions. Displaced citizens, who were once prosperous farmers, feel abandoned by both the international community and the very political parties they supported. The ultimate solution lies in their safe return to Western Tigray, yet the slow implementation of the peace agreement and rising tensions between Addis Ababa and the TPLF threaten to plunge the region back into a devastating conflict. What must be done to prevent another catastrophic war and save the lives of millions in Tigray?
