FIFTY YEARS WITH A CLASSIC SCOOTER

A British DAYTON ALBATROSS from 1959. In the late1950s I owned a series of British made Motor scooters, the best of which was the Dayton Albatross. I used this for many happy years for work and for pleasure. Included in this tribute to a great machine are photos taken at several period scootering activities. In the 1960s an International Scooter rally was held in the Isle of Man just after the famous tt Motorcycle races.The Dayton took me there. Back in1961 you could load your car or bike onto a plane and fly with it to France with Silver City Airlines.That was very convenient. I suppose modern economics explains why you can't do that today. On the isle of Man similar competitive events to those of the TT Event but more applicable to scooters ran right through the week with awards being given. There was also an Assembly Rally departing from many locations in the UK. I set out from Chudleigh in South Devon.In the photo at that start you can see a Vespa entrant still rebuilding his engine just before the starting time! In those days bikes and cars had to be hoisted on board the ship by cranes. Today you can drive on and off. The restoration of the second Dayton was featured in the September 1998 edition of Scootering Magazine.
