India's central government has consolidated 29 existing labour laws into four comprehensive Labour Codes, which were implemented on November 21, 2025. The goal of these codes is to simplify regulations, ensure universal wage and social security protection for workers, and improve the ease of doing business in India. The four labour codes are: The Code on Wages, 2019: This code amalgamates four existing laws, including the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, and the Payment of Wages Act, 1936. Key Provisions: It introduces a universal right to a minimum wage and timely payment of wages for all workers, regardless of employment sector. It also mandates a national "floor wage" and ensures gender neutrality in wage and recruitment matters. The Industrial Relations Code, 2020: This code merges three laws, including the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947. Key Provisions: It streamlines rules for trade unions and industrial dispute resolution, allowing for faster justice via two-member tribunals. It formally recognizes fixed-term employment and provides for re-skilling funds for retrenched workers. The Code on Social Security, 2020: Consolidating nine existing laws, this code expands social security coverage to all workers, including unorganised, gig, and platform workers. Key Provisions: It provides for provident fund (PF), employee state insurance (ESI), maternity benefits, and gratuity. A dedicated Social Security Fund will be created for unorganized workers, financed in part by contributions from aggregators. The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSHWC) Code, 2020: This code integrates 13 laws, such as the Factories Act, 1948, and the Mines Act, 1952.
