This medieval church ruin is located in one of Norfolk's deserted villages. The village was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 and the church is the only building of the old village to survive the plague. The ruins date to the 12th century and are Grade Two Listed. The tower was constructed in the early 14th century. At the time the tower was built the settlement had just 31 tax payers. It was built purely to celebrate the greater glory of God rather than to serve the small congregation. The tiny settlement shrunk further once the black death struck, after which only three tax payers remained. During the Reformation in the 16th century the church's assets were seized and the land was sold. The remains were utilised as a barn and graveyard used for grazing sheep. Paranormal folklore still report the sound of phantom bells ringing within the vicinity of the church ruin. Many believe this could be an invincible procession of pilgrims. Others theorise the sounds could signify leprosy sufferers walking to the church in search of a miracle cure. Lepers were required by law to ring bells to warn people of their impending presence.
