THIS IS A LONG DESCRIPTION BUT BEAR WITH ME His experiment failed. He was alone. Until he wasn't. Varian began to hear voices coming from all around him. Pained, suffering voices, beckoning him to follow them. They offered to give him whatever he wanted, and what he wanted was his father back. He couldn't save Lilith, but he would be damned if he left his father in that amber another second longer. The voices in the black rocks told him to find the sun to stop the moon, and so he did. He sought out Rapunzel and begged her to take him to the sundrop flower. She agreed, feeling guilty about how she left things with him and Lilith. However while they searched beneath Corona, Rapunzel kept asking about Lilith. About how she was and what they were up to. That's when it hit Varian: she had no idea that Lilith had been missing for weeks, and that now she was... Enraged, Varian told Rapunzel to ask her father about Lilith's mother, the mage that stopped the black rocks 14 years ago and gave her life to do it. With that, he disappeared. Despite his effort, the sundrop flower didn't work, all it did was make him even more lost. "Don't be afraid, Vessel of the Moon, we are here. We will always be here." The voices never stopped. They demanded that he let them in, that he travel somewhere far beyond Corona's border in search of something great. He tried to ignore them, but he had reached his breaking point. He had failed Lilith, he had failed his father, and now there was nothing left for him but the voices. So he lets them in. He lets their rage and thirst for vengeance guide him to seek justice against King Fredrick, the one who let down his kingdom by ignoring the rocks. What did it matter if he was the villain, he would have his revenge, and finally, he would have peace. MOONSTONE LORE: So in this AU I have it where the world was once full of magic, until the demon Zhan Tiri created a powerful weapon that fed on magical creatures and stole their power. Their souls became forever trapped within the stone. Lord Demanitus was able to defeat Zhan Tiri and break apart the stone with the remaining Magicfolk's help. Splitting the sundrop and moonstone cause the trapped souls to be split apart as well. The goodness, hope, and joy of these doomed souls was retained in the sundrop, distributing the power it contained to help the sick and injured. The hatred, rage, and vengeance that remained was trapped in the moonstone, creating black rocks to feed on the magic of the world. The more the moonstone fed, the stronger the sundrop became. The more the sundrop gave, the hungrier the moonstone grew. It became and endless cycle on opposite ends of the world, with the Dark Kingdom using the moonstone to conquer, and Mother Gothel using the sundrop to keep herself young. Over the centuries, the stones took on a semblance of consciousness, becoming their own beings, finding voices in the souls of the dead, and selecting their own vessels in Rapunzel and Eugene's bloodline. (When King Edmund tried to destroy the moonstone, it retaliated by selecting a new vessel in Quirin and his bloodline). Rapunzel is such a happy ray of sunshine because she is filled with the emotions of the sundrop. And if Varian were to take on the moonstone, he would be fueled by the negativity of it. Here, Varian is driven by the smaller influence of the moonstone through the black rocks. He's not possessed, per se, it's more that he is young and vulnerable to the suggestion of the souls that the moonstone puppets. Sending him further and further down his dark path. Rapunzel is able to mildly control the black rocks because the moonstone and sundrop are connected, and it is in their nature to want to reunite. The moonstone wants to break free of this control and find its chosen vessel so it too can roam freely as the sundrop does. Once again I will iterate that Varian is NOT possessed. Kidnapping the queen and threatening Corona were still decisions he made of his own volition. His judgment and his moral limits were simply warped by the moonstone, causing him to go off the deep end in the season finale.
