After Lilith is taken by a mysterious stranger (with a surprising amount of knowledge on the black rocks, riding a rhino), Varian is desperate to save her. He tried to go back to Corona to get Rapunzel's help, but he was stopped by the guards. He was labeled a dangerous traitor after the snow storm, no one would let him in to see the princess. He begged for hours, to get somebody to listen to him, to get them to help Lilith. After all, when everyone in Corona found out that she had magic, she had spent weeks doing whatever they asked of her. The people of Corona owed her. Still, no one listened. With no other choice, he tried to decipher Lilith's notes, the things his father had hidden in the wall, everything if it meant finding her. To no avail. Without Lilith, he couldn't do any magic, and without his father, he couldn't ask about the black rocks. So he did what he does best, he started experimenting, because maybe if he could solve the black rocks problem, somebody would finally listen to him.
