Now that you have selected an image of the Buddha and have been recalling that image consistently for some time—perhaps for several weeks or even months—you may begin to notice some changes within your mind. By now, your mind may feel lighter than before. Negative thoughts may arise less frequently, and the heart may feel calmer and more at ease. This is a natural result of repeatedly recalling the image of the Buddha, because each time the image appears in your mind, it gently interrupts the stream of thoughts—whether those thoughts are positive or negative. When the chain of thinking is interrupted, the mind begins to settle into a more neutral and balanced state. At this stage, you may find that you can recall the image of the Buddha easily, whether your eyes are open or closed. The image can appear in the mind whenever you wish. This means the practice has begun to take root. But the practice does not stop there. Alongside recalling the image of the Buddha, it is also important to observe your actions throughout the entire waking day. Pay attention to three areas: your physical actions, your speech, and your mental intentions. To support this practice, we incorporate the Five Precepts, which serve as a foundation for a peaceful and stable mind. The Five Precepts are: To abstain from taking life — cultivating compassion and respect for all living beings. To abstain from taking what is not given — practicing honesty and respect for others’ property. To abstain from sexual misconduct — maintaining responsibility and respect in relationships. To abstain from false speech — speaking truthfully and kindly. To abstain from intoxicants that cloud the mind — protecting clarity and mindfulness. These precepts act as a safeguard for the mind. When our actions and speech remain pure, the mind becomes naturally lighter and less disturbed. In addition to the Five Precepts, it is also beneficial to reflect on the Ten Wholesome and Unwholesome Actions (Kamma Patha), which help us understand how our actions shape the condition of the mind. The Ten Unwholesome Actions are: Three through the body Killing Stealing Sexual misconduct Four through speech 4. Lying 5. Divisive speech 6. Harsh speech 7. Idle or useless chatter Three through the mind 8. Covetousness (craving what belongs to others) 9. Ill will or hatred 10. Wrong view By being mindful of these actions and gradually avoiding the unwholesome ones, the mind naturally begins to return to a more neutral and peaceful state. As your practice continues, you may begin to notice something very interesting in your daily life. With fewer thoughts constantly occupying the mind, your attention becomes clearer. Your focus becomes stronger. And the energy that was once scattered through endless thinking begins to gather. You may feel a sense of quiet strength within the mind—more clarity, more stability, and even an abundance of energy. The mind becomes less noisy, less restless, and more present in each moment. This is a sign that the practice is beginning to deepen. In the next episode, we will explore how this calm and collected mind can begin to observe the nature of thoughts and feelings more clearly, leading us further toward freedom from suffering.
