Young Jean-Baptiste was a page to the king, and he received musical instruction from François Collin de Blamont. Cardonne was a child prodigy: at the age of only thirteen, he composed a motet for large choir, which was performed for the king. Other works of his soon followed, and were debuted for the aristocracy. By age fifteen, he was a singer and a harpsichordist in the “Royal Chapel”. In the 1750s, he was singing in the choir of the theater of the Marquise de Pompadour. He received commissions to compose harpsichord and vocal pieces for the daughters of King Louis, and for the dauphine Maria Josepha (the mother of future King Louis XVI). In 1768, he took leave from his musical position at court in order to write operas. However, these were not very successful, so he returned to his former job at Versailles. In 1780, he was named “Music Master of the King” (Louis XVI). The last recorded trace of his that we find is from August, 1792; the following month, the monarchy collapsed, and we have no idea what happened to him then. Did he manage to discreetly escape the barbarity of the revolution, or did he share the tragic fate of so many innocents who were guillotined by the merciless scoundrels who had seized power? The present piece – a set of variations on a theme that was quite popular at the time – was composed for harp, yet it is easily playable on the harpsichord as well.
