World Première Recording 1) Andante: 00:00 2) Allegro: 4:26 Henry Holcombe was born in April, 1690; he was trained as a chorister at Chester Cathedral when he was a child. In 1705, he moved to London, as did many other young English musicians who wished to take an active part in musical life in that capital. He began his career there by singing at the Drury Lane Theatre, and soon acquired music pupils to supplement his income. Holcombe published his Opus 1 relatively late in life, when he was fifty-five years of age. It is an interesting volume of pieces, entitled: “Six Solos for a Violin and Thorough Bass with some Pieces for the German Flute and Harpsichord”. The final two movements in this collection are for harpsichord solo; it is a sonata in the Italian style, containing two movements, an Andante and Allegro. (somewhat reminiscent of the similar pairing of sonatas that we often find in the compositional output of Domenico Scarlatti.)
