WHAT YOU DO: A Foley artist uses different props and recording equipment to create sound effects (SFX) that match the actions happening in a feature film or TV production. EDUCATION: Familiarity with audio production, the post-production process, and sound equipment. USEFUL SKILLS: Physical fitness, timing, coordination, attention to detail, and serious creativity. HOW TO GET IN: Intern at a sound studio or apprentice under a sound editor. CAREER PATH: Begin by becoming an intern or apprentice in the field of sound recording and editing. Find a job as an assistant on a sound editing crew or another low-level job in the production sound department or at a post-production studio. Meanwhile, build up a portfolio of different sound effects and meet as many other artists as you can. With creativity and a lot of networking, you can work your way up to become a recognized Foley Artist. PAYBACK: Typically about $45,000 per year. DOWNSIDES: Takes years of experience. It's difficult to become a recognized Foley Artist, and it's also hard to find work if you're not yet recognized; increasingly, most smaller films rely on digital sound libraries, so there aren't a lot of job openings. FUTURE OF JOB: Number of jobs is expected to grow up to 2% in the 2013-2022 decade, which is slower than average. NETWORKING: The Cinema Audio Society has resources for Foley Artists: http://cinemaaudiosociety.org/ Video produced by students at LACES (Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies) working with Gigniks' career media program.
