Nathalie Fridzema is a PhD candidate at the University of Groningen, at the centre for Media and Journalism Studies. Her research is on a cultural history of the early Dutch web in which she focuses the vernacular website practices and localized histories. Nathalie uses mixed-method approaches across her studies, borrowing elements from media archaeology and -archival studies. Anya Shchetvina is a cultural and media researcher, currently a PhD Candidate at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and a part of the research group "Kleine Formen"/"Literary and epistemic history of small forms". Her dissertation focuses on the history and theory of how the internet has been historically imagined via the form of a manifesto. She is an ex-coordinator of The club for internet and society enthusiasts and co-organised the yearly conference Internet Beyond. In recent years, together with Nathalie Fridzema she has been coordinating an independent and open-format research initiative Matter of Imagination. Her research interests include web history, electronic literature, media archaeology, media aesthetics, and theories of memory and imagination. This is a recording of their paper "Nostalgia, DIY, and Internet Critique: The Emergence of the ‘Vernacular Web’ as an Imaginary of Alternative Digital Futures" presented on 24 June 2025 at the 4th ReDICo Conference.
