When we think of innovation, we tend to picture new products, new apps, new machines. But what if innovation is not simply about making things – but about making worlds? In this CHx in Conversation episode, economist and UNESCO expert Antonio Carlos Ruiz Soria speaks with philosopher Vincent Blok (Erasmus University Rotterdam) about how technological innovations participate in the creation of new worlds, how they reshape our everyday experience and social structures, and why the temporal, evolutionary dimension of innovation matters far more than we usually acknowledge. Together, they explore: -Why technologies like the steam engine, AI and digital twins do more than solve problems – they found whole “worlds” in which humans and non-humans find their place. -The example of Europe’s Destination Earth digital twin and the ontological questions it raises about the relation between virtual and physical worlds. -Schumpeter’s idea of creative destruction and Vincent Blok’s proposal to think in terms of world creation, beyond a narrow techno-economic paradigm. -Power concentration, big tech, and whether there is still real space for startups and responsible innovation. -Why an ecosystem perspective on innovation – rather than a tech-centric one – is crucial in the Anthropocene
