A fast and easy jewelry beading technique! In this video I show you how to stitch a beautiful structure called "The Chinese American Beaded Wheel." You can stitch the basic structure in 30 minutes or less. Then make earrings as shown or necklaces by interlinking Wheels to make beaded chains. Or for a minimalist look, string a few Wheels onto a neckwire, adding more elements or not as you wish. How Many Beads are Needed? --For a small Beaded Wheel with 12 rings around, you will need 108 beads. This is this size I teach in this tutorial. --For a larger Beaded Wheel with 16 beads around, you will need 144 beads. --Other sizes of Wheels can be made - requiring other numbers of beads. --Experiment! Where to Find the Beads Used in this Tutorial? The pink beads I use in this tutorial are made in America from brass finished with an enamel coating. They come in many colors. The color I'm using here is called "Fuschia." The earrings shown in the thumbnail are made with size 11/0 Fuschia beads. Here is a link to a shop on Etsy that sells these beautiful beads - just search the shop for "heavy metal beads." https://www.etsy.com/shop/BeadParlorB... Where to Find the Beads Used in the Thumbnail Photo? The beads in the thumbnail photo are made of 2mm oxidized sterling silver beads. Other sizes of oxidized sterling beads will work too. If you don't know how to oxidized sterling beads yourself, you can buy them already oxidized here by doing a quick search: https://www.etsy.com/people/MegaBeadS... What Kind of Thread Works Best? I'm using Fireline 4 lb test in the smoke color. I double it and lightly wax it. Though doubling and waxing are not required. Here is one of many places you can buy it online. Just search for "Fireline 4 lb Test Smoke": https://www.etsy.com/shop/whitefoxbeads Where Did This Beaded Wheel Structure Come From? Take a look at the small beaded motorcycle I show in the Introduction. I found it in Beijing in 2005 or so. I brought it home and used its wheels for inspiration as I designed my own kind of Beaded Wheel. That's why I call this structure "Chinese American" Beaded Wheel. It's a product of 2 beading cultures. Have Chinese Beaders Made Other Wheels? Yes! Also in the Introduction video I show a small beaded rickshaw with wheels made in a different way. I'll teach this one in the future, along with the wheel attached to the beaded motorcycle. Which Beading Techniqiue is Involved in the Chinese American Beaded Wheel? The technique doesn't have a name. It's a kind of pentagon-hexagon stitch. Or you could say hexagon-pentagon stitch. Chinese beaders combine pentagons and hexagons in countless ways to produce structures of many different shapes. Sometimes, they add in cells shaped liked right angles or septagons - in which case, the technqiue names might be something like "pentagon-hexagon-right angle stitch" or "pentagon-hexagon-heptagon stitch." Which Other Chinese Structures are Similar in Shape? If you like ovals, check out my MIRAH tutorial here. I''ll upload a much shorter version soon. • The Mirah, Part 1 - Beading Tutorial - Beg... Where to See Other Pieces of Chinese Beadwork? Mainland Chinese beadwork is not well published. Which seems strange, since thousands of pieces have been made over the last 2000 years. You can see a few historic pieces in the articles I've published to my academia.edu page. Some of the articles get pretty technical - but all feature full color photos.
