The Emergence of Large Language Models for All

Dr. Muland' Onando | IBM Research Africa, Kenya Abstract: Large Language Models have recently taken centre stage in research and product development leading into a gold rush by many organisations and governments to incorporate this technology in their strategy. But what exactly are LLM and what do they potent for the future? In this talk we shall cover the foundations of LLMs are a technology, reviewing the initial distributional semantic modelling for word to vector representations (Word2Vec - Mikolov et. al., 2013), to the Transformer Architecture model by Vaswani A. et.al. and seek to transition to the state of the art models called Large Language Models. Ultimately, we shall cover the several variations of LLMs and possible application domains, specifically to enable understanding of resources available for people of professions to experiment with and use LLMs.
