The Seine runs through the heart of Paris dividing the city into two halves, with Ile de la Cité and Ile St-Louis in the center. It has been a navigable river since ancient times, not only for commercial usage but by Viking dragon ships to sack Paris in the mid-9th century. Parisians enjoy picnicking, jogging, cycling, or seeing sunset along the riverbanks. Riverside strolling or cruising are popular tourist activities. Among 37 bridges in Paris across the Seine, the Alexander III Bridge is prettiest with its Art Nouveau decoration of lamps, cherubs, nymphs and winged horses. It is an engineering masterpiece of the 19th century, consisting of a single-span steel arch that is 352 ft long and 18 ft high. It was built in time for the 1900 Paris World's Fair, and was named after the Russian czar Alexander III to symbolize affirmation of the Franco-Russian Alliance before WWI. A network of canals in Paris are linked to the Seine, of which Canal St-Martin is deeply loved by both locals and tourists. It's crisscrossed by pretty green footbridges, and lined by leafy chestnut trees. Old buildings along the banks have been transformed into shops and apartments.
