First Production 1961 Norton Manxman 650 restoration (22) - Media Blasting the featherbed frame

I hope you will enjoy this mini-series from The Mighty Garage featuring a complete restoration of this very interesting motorcycle, the infamous *Norton Manxman*. This bike in particular is extra special in that it is the first production 650cc made by Norton. It took well over 5 hours to complete the media blasting for the Norton slimline featherbed frame and swing arm. The black paint coat and red primer(?) came off really well but the white epoxy(?) paint was harder to remove. I tried 4 applications for the blasting: 1. Glass bead (50lb bag): As you'd expect, the glass bead produced the finest results but took a long time to penetrate the paint. It's all expensive! 2. Aluminum Oxide (50lb bag): The Oxide was more successful than the glass bead and was quite expensive. It just didn't seem to go as fast as I thought it would. 3. Unfiltered sand: This didn't work well. The aggregate mix clogged up the pipe of the media blaster and needed constant attention. I abandoned this method. 4. Filtered sand: I finally dropped the sand through a window fly-screen to siv / pan the larger stones out. This was without doubt the best combination and significantly reduced the time to complete the blasting.
