Hi, I'm Ailbhe McDonagh. In this video, we explore how to really zone in on your tuning now that you are an intermediate player. Improving intonation isn't just about finger placement; it's about listening to the resonance of the instrument. One of the best ways to practice this is by playing "double stops" against an open string. In this lesson, we cover: ► The "drone" technique: playing your melody while holding a neighbouring open string. ► Listening for resonance: how to hear when the note "locks" into tune ► Why notes might need to be placed slightly differently than you expect to ring perfectly. ► Bow balance: the importance of keeping 50/50 weight on both strings to avoid distorting the pitch. Chapters: 0:00 Intro: zoning in on tuning 0:46 The "drone" exercise: playing with an open string 1:25 Listening for resonance (flat vs. sharp) 2:26 Adjusting intervals (surprising note placements) 4:02 Practicing shifts with a drone 4:30 Bow technique: 50/50 weight distribution All the videos in this cello pedagogy series were produced in 4K resolution and include YouTube's multilingual captions.
