The key of F# major has associations of dreaminess but also somewhat of the pastoral feel usually reserved for F major. In the Prelude we sense both of these characteristics together with a gentle Gigue dance movement. Often taken quickly, this more laid back tempo seems to fit better with the faster harmonic rhythm. That is, there is more of the melodic here than the rhythmic. It is hard to miss the confident swagger of the fugue. Of particular note is the countersubject with its jaunty repeated note figurations as well as the implied pedal notes providing a launching pad for the fugue subject entries.
