Singapore scientists find a way to grow brain cells from stem cells

Scientists in Singapore have found a way to grow brain cells, which could pave the way for both the study and treatment of disorders, like Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. The team led by Duke-NUS Medical School said that it grew neurons that can be transplanted to repair damaged tissues after a stroke. Brain cells are grown from stem cells taken from blood or skin, for example. The stem cells are mixed with a protein that helps blood to clot and a drug used to treat infection. In preclinical trials, the cells not only survived but matured into the target neuron type. These repaired the damaged brain in about a month.
