History and Background Information: First of here are some stunning numbers: The Kaunertal Glacier Road is the 5th highest road in the Alps (2750 Meters) and just 8 Meters lower than the famous Stilfser Joch/Passo Stelvio. It is also the 2nd highest dead end road after the Ötztal Glacier Road (2830 Meters) (   • Subaru Sti Type R: Ötztal Glacier Road || ...  ). Starting at the toll station the road has a length of 25,6 Kilometers. Over this distance there are 29 hairpin turns scattered. The road covers 1440 Meters of hillclimb (from 1310 to 2750 Meters). If you start in Pruns where the Kaunertal valley itself begins you will have to cover even 1880 Meters of climbing (from 870 to 2750 Meters). The road was also used as a scenery for Hollywood movies "Spectre" and "Triple X". The dam of the Gepatsch Lake is 153 Meters high and was the 10th highest of its kind when it was finished in 1964. Along the way to the top there are also a lot of other sights wich are marked by the signs with the ibex that you´ll notice next to the street. Now let´s talk subjective things. The road is awesome to drive and the view is one of the best I´ve ever seen on these tours. The only thing that keeps the Panorama Score from a 10/10 is that there is not as much change in the view as you would find on a pass road where one side of the montain will look totally different from the other sometimes. Especially in the mid section when you´ve left the Gepatsch Lake behind you´ll find yourself in a maze of hairpin turns and you´ll have a lot to do behind the wheel. I was especially lucky because the fuel tank was almost empty leading to a light rear axle and oversteer in those hairpins. :D But there are also downsides. The road layout and the altitude take their price. Because the speeds are so low through the tight and twisty turns the engine temps will raise dramatically. And it´s getting worse: the higher you get the more loss of engine power the car will have. This effect can´t be counterbalanced by higher RPMs due to the high temperatures. So as you go higher and higher the motor, the gearbox, the brakes and tires are stressed almost as much as on a race track causing quite some slowness. Also the toll is extraordinary high. I say this because: we didn´t get any kind of sticker/souvenir as you would on other panorama roads of this kind. The use of road sings is sometimes confusing and totally out of sense. For example on the very first kilometers there are a few construction sites and or speedlimits that don´t match up at all. Furthermore the signs that indicate the hairpin number and the related altitude are not clearly readable. The altitude is written in a too small font. For such high toll costs there has to be a bit more road security and more "service" and/or souvenirs. No matter this is the highest ranked and best road on the channel in the 2019 season and in the all time beautiful roads ranking so far.
