This is based on an old English nursery rhyme from 1784. Here's part of a version attributed to Meredith Willson (1953). It's often sung as a lullaby: I see the moon; the moon sees me Under the shade of the old oak tree. Please let the light that shines on me Shine on the one I love. Over the mountain, over the sea, Back where my heart is longing to be, Please let the light that shines on me Shine on the one I love. I hear the lark, the lark hears me, Singing from the leaves of the old oak tree, Oh, let the lark that sings to me, Sing to the one I love. I see the moon; the moon sees me Under the shade of the old oak tree. Please let the light that shines on me Shine on the one I love. From Wikipedia: There is a nursery rhyme with the same title. It matches a couplet that appears in English as early as 1784 in a work entitled Gammer Gurton's Garland, or, The Nursery Parnassus: I see the moon, and the moon sees me, God bless the moon, and God bless me!
