Welcome to Brutal Wonders ! Journey with us to explore a profound masterpiece of Brutalist architecture: the Church of Notre-Dame de Royan. This isn't just a building; it's a story of destruction, resilience, and audacious rebirth. 📅 A Scarred Past, A Bold Vision: Just 15 days before the end of World War II in Europe, on January 5th, 1945, the Allies tested a new weapon on Royan. 1,500,000 liters of Liquid Fire (NAPALM) were dropped, obliterating 95% of the city. Over 500 civilians perished. Yet, from these ashes rose a vision described as "magisterial, audacious, and ultramodern." 🏗️ The Genesis of a Brutalist Icon: Built between 1955 and 1958, the Church of Notre-Dame de Royan was designed by architects Guillaume Gillet and Marc Hébrard, in collaboration with engineers Bernard Lafaille and later René Sarger. Constructed entirely from unclad, reinforced raw concrete (béton brut), it is a powerful embodiment of the Brutalist style, defined by its simple geometric forms and massive, imposing volumes. 👍 Like this video if you were captivated by this architectural marvel! 🔔 Subscribe to this channel and hit the bell for more explorations of unique structures and hidden histories! 💬 Share your thoughts in the comments below!
