Martin Sirk discusses what black holes are, how they work, why we think they are real, the effect they have on galaxy evolution, and will dispel a few myths about them. Next, he will briefly talk about what was once called the "missing mass” problem, now called Dark Matter. Why do we think that most of the Universe is invisible? Martin Sirk works as a researcher at U. C. Berkeley’s Space Science Laboratory. An alumnus of U.C. Santa Cruz, he has worked on the Hubble Space Telescope, the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer, and half a dozen other NASA missions. He is currently working on the Keck Planet Finder spectrometer and Carruthers Geocoronal Imager. Martin took up amateur astronomy in high school and built his first telescope at age 15. He has been teaching the course Practical Observational Astronomy in the Sierra Nevada since 2000 and has been praised as being able to explain complex scientific concepts in clear, easy-to-understand language. An amateur naturalist, he has made hundreds of forays into the Sierra in all seasons. What's Up- Landing on the Moon is Hard!
