Hello, Happy St. Patrick’s Day out there to everyone, and welcome to your Tuesday cover song by Mike and Jackie. This is where we pick a tune out of the vast collection of pop/rock/oldies/bluegrass/worship standards from years past and try to bring them back to the forefront, even for just a short time. We’re glad you’re along for the ride, and if you enjoy what you hear, please consider hitting the thumbs-up icon, commenting, sharing, or even subscribing to any one of our 3 channels. Thanks very much, it’s greatly appreciated! Today’s selection is Australia’s Men at Work and their hit single from March 1983, “Overkill.” Off their second album, Cargo, “Overkill” peaked at #3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts. It dealt with the sudden fame the band found itself facing, becoming a worldwide phenomenon in just a short time. It reflected “themes of anxiety, the fear of success, and stepping into the unknown, while featuring a more introspective, melodic tone compared to their earlier, more uptempo hits.” Colin Hay, a guitarist and writer of this song, described being overwhelmed with anxiety and loss of control that accompanied the sudden success and personal change he felt. His feelings of fear of stepping into the unknown as Men at Work’s popularity grew gave him the impetus to write “Overkill,” and I believe anyone who has found themselves in that same situation could easily identify with those emotions. Jackie handled lead and harmony singing duties, and I added bass to a lone acoustic guitar, giving this version a real coffeehouse feel. So, if Colin Hay ever finds himself in Iowa on a Saturday morning, you can be sure the three of us will be knocking down some righteous tunes at your local establishment where hot coffee and delicious pastries are served with a smile! Sounds great, doesn’t it? Thanks again for stopping by to listen. We will see you again this coming Friday with a new cover that was made famous in the 2002 Spider-Man film starring Toby Maguire. So be a big hero and ring that notification bell to be alerted when the song drops. Bye! Disclaimer: We do not own the rights to this song. No copyright infringement intended.
