49 of the pianists are from the 20th, and 1 is from the 19th! Sorry if some of the editing of the video is haphazard, I had to work with a software I was unfamiliar with and worked all day as soon as I saw the previous list on YouTube. Making a list like this was very difficult, at this level it's very very hard to order people, and exclude some many great pianists such as: Egon Petri, Carlo Zecchi, Arthur Rubinstein, Robert Lortat, Yves Nat, Artur de Greef, Bela Bartok, Edwin Fischer, Leo Sirota, Sergei Prokofiev, Rosina Lhevinne, Percy Grainger, Claudio Arrau, Solomon, Marcelle Meyer, Walter Gieseking, Clara Haskil, Mieczysław Horszowski, Maria Grinberg, Yakov Zak, Lev Oborin, Grigory Ginzburg, Alexander Brailowsky, Shura Cherkassky, Emil Gilels, and many more... I decided to include Art Tatum despite not being a classical pianist, he did improvise in the classical style, and perhaps if the times were different in America during his lifetime, he would've had more classical records. The criteria I mostly chose for was a strong artistic spirit, poetic nature and being able to say a lot with a little. At this level like I said, it can be quite difficult to come to concrete conclusions, but, I would not make a mistake as poorly as rating Hofmann below Brendel. If there is any disagreements you have about rankings, feel free to comment, and I will try to justify my picks. Lastly, to anyone who complains about the static. Remember it is not about recordings, but the phrase, the dynamic intention, the rhythmic pulse, tone quality, and all of these things more or less can be clearly understood with or without static. Alas here is the list and the pieces played 50. Dinu Lipatti 0:10-3:34 Bach-Hess Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring. 49. Artur Schnabel 3:36-14:24 Beethoven 32nd Sonata 2nd Movement 48.
