Awesome Akakura Kogen Powder Day!

It had been a tough couple of days in Myoko, with torrential rain on the 19th February where a lot of snow was lost and then wind and only a slight bit of snow on the 20th. Finally that night, it started snowing hard and we awoke on the 21st to find several feet of new snow. We had a bit of a decision to make on where to ski but we felt that Akakura Kanko was the least risk as we wouldn't have far to go and we didn't have to take the roads. We were second in line at the quad chair in Akakura Onsen and then made our way across to the Kanko side. Unfortunately, the trail over to the upper lifts at Kanko was closed, so we had to wait it out for a couple of hours. Finally, the triple chair next to the ski jumps opened and we were heading up. The red run had been groomed earlier and it was boot top deep and when we got to the steep, black run, it was really deep, up to our thighs. We had at lest 6 runs in this zone, with faceshots on most turns and free refills as the heavy snowfalls kept filling it in. With a short and quick lift, these were fast laps. We had a blast. After a couple of hours, they got the other lifts running and we had the run to ourselves. We kept moving to the right for fresh lines. This was the deepest day for me, for the whole of the 2023 season and a proper taste of the potential of the skiing in the Myoko area......
