ESP Ra.De. was one of the first Cave games that truly captivated me. Back then, I lacked shooting game skills, struggling to even reach the fourth boss. However, I was drawn in by the cyberpunk visuals and unique characters, even though the difficulty initially felt insurmountable. It wasn't until I achieved some one-credit clears in other games that I felt ready to take on ESP Ra.De. It took roughly 3-4 months of dedicated effort to accomplish this clear. At times, it felt nearly impossible, but in this particular run, everything fell into place. The key to success was making intelligent use of the force field at the first sign of trouble. For commentary, be sure to turn on subtitles or closed captions. Game Background: ESP Ra.De. marked Cave's third venture into vertical shooting games and was released in Japanese arcades in 1998. Unlike their earlier titles that featured high-tech ships, this game focused on playable characters. Notably, ESP Ra.De. had a significant influence on Espgaluda, which came out in 2003. The game boasts a distinctive cyberpunk aesthetic with detailed and impressive graphics, thanks to Junya Inoue's artwork. Although the music may not be as memorable as Espgaluda, it effectively complements the gameplay without being intrusive. Set in a future Tokyo of 2018, ESP Ra.De. envisions a world where certain individuals have developed extra sensory powers. One of these "Espers," known as Mrs. Gara, gains political power through a criminal organization called Yaksa. The player characters hold a grudge against her and are compelled to take action when her ambitions to rule over Tokyo become evident. The final challenge in this brutally difficult game are Mrs. Gara and her army of Alice clones. All player characters in the game are troubled teenagers with extra sensory powers. Each one possesses a unique shot type and special attack. While the special attack is unlimited, it requires a few seconds to recharge after each use. ESP Ra.De. deviates from the traditional bomb mechanic by introducing a force field, triggered with the C button. Holding the button down allows for extended protection, and releasing it unleashes a devastating attack that grows in power the longer it's charged. This feature can be used both defensively and offensively, with its usage limited by a meter displayed in the bottom left corner. The scoring system might be a bit complex, especially for those focused on survival, but the basic mechanics are as follows. Initially, enemies drop power-up cubes upon defeat. Once you've collected enough of these cubes, the destroyed enemies will begin to drop orange cubes, which are crucial for scoring. The number of cubes dropped depends on how the enemy was defeated and how many of its bullets were on screen at the time. These orange cubes serve a dual purpose; collecting over 200 of them results in enemies dropping energy cubes that replenish your force field meter. The meter resets, and you won't be able to replenish it again until you collect 300 cubes. The next time it resets will be at 400 cubes, then 500 cubes, and so on. It's a clever system that caters to both score chasers and survival-focused players. ESP Ra.De. is not a title recommended for shooting game beginners. The fourth and fifth stages pose significant challenges, and the final boss fight is long and demanding. While the gameplay and soundtrack may not reach the heights of Espgaluda, it still stands as a fantastic shooting game.
