What is Turtle Island? Turtle Island (certified in Austria as a scientific institution and research lab with the focus on preserving and breeding turtles and category A zoo), managed by the internationally renowned scientist and zoologist Peter Praschag, aims to breed endangered turtle species worldwide. With over 240 species and more than 2500 turtles at four locations in Styria/Austria, Turtle Island is a Noah's Ark for endangered species. Our daily work is characterized by scientific research, nature conservation, animal welfare and species protection. Together with our global network of partners and supporters we are helping to rescue the most threatened group of vertebrates on our planet - turtles. For turtle species with very few remaining individuals, breeding groups in captivity are the only chance to preserve the species for posterity. We have started many projects to work towards our mission of saving these critically endangered species.
