(11 Apr 1997) Natural Sound There was fresh violence in the West Bank town of Hebron Friday. Yasser Arafat's police were out on the streets trying to stem the clashes between stone-throwing Palestinians and Israeli soldiers. Scuffles broke out between Palestinian Authority police and journalists covering the clashes, after a Palestinian officer reportedly accused the press of collaborating with Israel. Meanwhile Israeli soldiers boarded up the homes Friday of suspected Hamas terrorists who were arrested in the West Bank village of Zurif. Israeli troops weave their way through the streets of Hebron, ready to face the latest round of clashes with Palestinians. The violence on the West Bank shows no sign of abating - groups of Palestinian youths attacked the Israeli forces with stones, empty bottles and other missiles. Palestinian police officers were also on hand Friday in an attempt to quell the unrest. The Palestinian forces formed a cordon to push the rioters back. They took up positions on rooftops to prevent stone-throwers from climbing there - as they have in the past - to gain a better vantage point from which to attack the Israelis. In the midst of Friday's unrest, a row broke out between Palestinian police officers and a group of journalists - Palestinian, Israeli and foreign - covering the clashes. The journalists were angered by a Palestinian police officer, who had reportedly encouraged the stone throwers to target journalists, shouting that they were collaborators with Israel. Palestinian forces formed a cordon to push the rioters back, and brought in three police trucks to form a barrier. At least one Israeli soldier was injured during the stone-throwing. The presence of Yasser Arafat's forces is being seen as a sign that the Palestinians are willing to co-operate with Israel to try and stem the daily violence in the area. Local residents went out to clear up after this latest round of unrest. Demonstrators pushed their way into the Israeli-controlled centre of the town, where the Palestinian police have no access. Meanwhile Israeli troops moved into the West Bank village of Zurif and sealed off the homes of Hamas members arrested this week in a joint Palestinian-Israeli police operation. It follows Thursday's discovery of the body of an Israeli soldier, Sergeant Sharon Edri, near Zurif. Edri was kidnapped and shot last year, allegedly by members of the Hamas terror cell based in the village. The army said the same Hamas cell was responsible for the March 21 suicide bombing in a Tel Aviv cafe that killed three Israeli women and the bomber, as well as for the deaths of nine other soldiers. Residents said Israeli troops arrested more than 20 people in the village Thursday as part of the operation.
