In early 2026, there are signs of threats to the USA's democracy, which would have global implications. In this session our Executive Director Brian Powers has a conversation with Dr Rita Nakaskima Brock, who lives in the Twin Cities Metro area of Minnesota and has been deeply involved with events since federal agents killed Renee Good on 6 January 2026. We consider dimensions of moral injury in what is happening to the US and why Minnesota became such an important centre of resistance to violations of the US Constitution and grave threats to the Republic itself. Discussion includes what strategies for resistance and surviving the next decade have worked in Minnesota and what religious communities may offer to sustain moral resilience for the long struggle ahead. Rita Nakashima Brock, RelM, MA, PhD (she, her), is a recognised expert on moral injury and has been engaged in direct action for peace and justice since 1968. She co-founded and directed the Soul Repair Center at Brite Divinity School from 2012 to 2017, and from 2017 to 2025, she was Senior Vice President for Moral Injury Recovery Programs at Volunteers of America (VOA), a large social services non-profit. The educational programmes she created at VOA are now being offered via the Soul Repair Center at Brite Divinity School. She lives in Minnesota, formerly the lands of the Dakota and Anishinaabe peoples.
