Woman Jailed After Dumping Man Who Funded Her Education – The Fortunate Kyarikunda Story In a dramatic case that has sparked debate across southwestern Uganda, Fortunate Kyarikunda has been sent to civil prison for failing to compensate a man who sponsored her education after promising to marry him. This is the story of love, betrayal, and the law: Kyarikunda, a law enforcement officer from Kanungu District, was supported financially by Richard Tumwiine, a primary school teacher, who believed their relationship would lead to marriage. Tumwiine spent over 9.4 million Uganda shillings on Kyarikunda’s education, including her Diploma in Legal Practice at the Law Development Centre in Kampala. After completing her studies, Kyarikunda called off their marriage, citing stress and an age difference, leaving Tumwiine devastated. He filed a breach of promise to marry case, and the courts ordered Kyarikunda to refund the money he spent. Despite repeated court rulings, Kyarikunda failed to comply, and by March 2026, the total debt had grown to 14,099,100 shillings. On March 10, 2026, Kyarikunda was arrested and sentenced to six months in civil prison, unless she pays the debt. The case raises important questions about commitment, promises, financial support in relationships, and the consequences of ignoring legal orders. This story has captured nationwide attention, showing how love, trust, and legal obligations collided in an extraordinary Ugandan court case.
