The Mason Mountain Mine is a well-known ruby and saphire mine located in Franklin, North Carolina. All payments are taken at the Cowee giftshop, so be sure to stop in there before heading down to the sluicing area. At this mine, you can pay for a full day of digging through their native dirt pile with unlimited bucket fills or by the bucket. We opted to pay for the full day and had some pretty good luck! You start out by filling your bucket with the native dirt that is brought out of the mine. Next you wheel your bucket over to the sluice, and then you can take a seat and start sifting to see what you may have found. We came home with a few really cool pieces! We especially liked the large specimen of rhodolite garnets in matrix. It was a good bit of work but it was a fun experience and I'm sure we will be back again soon!
