Phytonutrients, which are also called phytochemicals, are chemicals produced by plants. Plants use them to protect from insect attacks, and against radiation from UV rays. They also provide plants with their sensory characteristics such as their color, flavor and smell. Researchers believe that up to 40,000 phytonutrients will someday be classified and understood. Phytonutrients can also provide significant benefits for humans who eat plant foods. Vitamins and minerals are essential for life, phytonutrients are not, however, when you consume them they may help prevent disease and help your body function properly. Some of the benefits of phytonutrients include antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities; they may also enhance immunity, repair DNA damage from toxins, and increase intercellular communication. Phytonutrient rich foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, teas, herbs and spices. Bottom line time.
