Our group of two was led by our guide, Marine, who was originally from northern France and has a wealth of knowledge about the biodiversity and ecological structure of this area of Costa Rica. She led us on a relaxed tour, frequently assessing our comfort and, when it was safe and appropriate to do so, asking us if we felt ready for another trot. She asked us if we would like a cold coconut to drink from as we rode, and I thought that sounded fantastic. She had us wait on our horses while she went into a roadside coconut stand. She returned with three smallish coconuts, each with a green straw (one for each of us). These had a surprising amount of cold liquid inside! It was refreshing and very fun to drink from a coconut while riding a horse. Afterward, she said we could put the empty shell in our saddlebag. At the end of our ride, we took out the coconut shells, placed them on the ground, and whacked them with a long machete to split them open - I was able to split the shell on the first swing! We thoroughly rinsed off the inside of the coconut with a hose and used a sturdy spoon to scrape out the white portion, which I shared with my horse, Chum. 01:52 crossing the Buena Vista River 02:08 riding under a canopy of palms 03:18 stream crossing 08:22 under another palm canopy 11:57 approaching Playa Buena Vista 12:14 walking along Buena Vista beach 18:51 cantering on Buena Vista beach 20:35 an unexpected dismount (my horse decided to lay down) 25:11 crossing onto a finca (cattle ranch) 26:44 fording the Buena Vista River 27:58 returning to the starting point Now I will tell you about the horse I rode: I trailed behind the other two horses astride Chum, a willful, temperament horse who tried several times to injure me. First, Chum decided he didn’t want to walk in the mud which was in the center of the trail. No, he wanted to walk on the narrow, dry portion of the trail and completely discounted the extra width of my legs. He refused to respond to my reining, no matter how forceful I was in steering him away from the fence post that he insisted on scraping past. My right leg was slowly squeezed between the saddle and the post. He either lacked spatial awareness with my body on his back, or he legitimately was ill-willed. Several times, I fought with him to not drag me against barbed wire fences or sharp two-inch thorny vines. My hands were rope-burned from him violently and repeatedly jerking his head down to the ground while I was firmly holding the reins. The worst thing he did was after we had walked through the ocean and were back on the trail. He suddenly laid down on his side on the dirt while I was on his back. My right foot was caught in the stirrup and I had to work quickly to extricate it before he rolled over or got back up. Overall, this was an absolutely amazing experience and I loved ALL of it. I even didn't mind the injuries that Chum gave me (there were several, and two weeks later, my ankle still actually hurts a bit). I have never had such an interesting and beautiful horseback ride experience, and I loved hearing Marine's informative explanations about the local flora and fauna. #horse #horseback #ride #horsebackride #costarica #puravida #jungle #beach #trails #ocean #horsejungle #samara #guanacaste
