In this video we visit the busy tram stop at Melbourne University, the northern terminus of the busy Swanston Street tram corridor in the CBD. Melbourne University is the city terminus of routes 3, 3a, 5, 16, 64, 67 & 72, with multiple turnback sidings allowing trams to head back through the CBD and into the suburbs. Routes 1 & 8 also serve the terminus but continue further north. Usually Melbourne University is a very busy terminus; especially during peak hours where a lot of students pass through. However the COVID-19 pandemic moving classes online meant that the terminus was dead quiet on this occasion. Here we see a large variety of different trams including Z3, A2, B2, D1 & D2 (Siemens Combino) Class trams at the terminus. Melbourne University wasn't always the busy terminus it is today. Trams along the Swanston Street corridor used to terminate at Frankin Street (adjacent to the current day RMIT University tram stop). However in the mid 1990's the terminus was moved to Melbourne University. In 2005 the terminus was rebuilt into a new modern platform stop, and is one of the few tram stops in Melbourne to have its own unique architectural design.
