Today I have a question from our membership community in response to the posts I have been doing recently on the Best Time of Day for sleeping, eating, exercising etc. according to the Ayurvedic clock. Be sure to stay tuned all the way to the end so I can tell you where to get your own Ayurvedic clock for your own reference. Jayne says, Do you have any advice on times for sleeping and exercise for night shift working. I work 9 pm until 5 am. Dear Jayne, Ayurveda is a sacred system of science and philosophy that is designed to help you connect with the truth in your daily life. It is a holistic form of medicine based on a close relationship between yourself and your natural environment. It holds true that we are a microcosm of our larger macrocosm. When the five basic elements of nature, ether, air, fire, water and earth are in balance in us, we will experience harmony. So I've been spending some more time studying the Ayurvedic clock. Starting from when you wake up. There is a kapha time from 6 pm to 10 pm, so if Jayne could exercise in that window before you go to work, that she would balance the slow kapha energy at that time of day. If Jayne could have her largest meal, during pitta time between 10 pm and 2 am while she is at work, her digestive fires will be strongest then - during her shift-work wake time hours. Also, hopefully she won't be as hungry when she gets home. I assume Jayne will get home around 6 am, which is kapha time, perfect for winding down and going to sleep. Digestion is lowest at this point, so have a small meal. Jayne’s healing time will be during the other pitta time, 10 am to 12 noon, so she needs to be sleeping then. Shift work is not easy on your body for sure, so make sure you rest as much as you can. Keep your room as dark as you can during the day as well. Namaste, Melissa If you want to know what dosha you are and you would like to know more about Ayurveda, I will refer you to this blog post where I tell you about my favourite resources and online quizes: http://www.melissawest.com/reliable-s... Also if you would like more support in balancing your doshas through yoga, then I highly recommend our postures and pranayama section in our membership community. In that section we have yoga classes where we modify each yoga pose to balance each Ayurvedic constitution. Stimulating for kaphas, calming for vatas, and cooling for pittas. http://www.drwest.ca/forumdisplay.php...
