Volume 3 of Francois Rabbath's "New Technique for the Double Bass" is a book that has helped expand the technique and open the eyes of countless bass players. That being said, it can also be very overwhelming when you first open the cover, and so I wanted to break down how to first approach the scales in the book (hint: working through it methodically will exponentially increase your chance for success and sticking with it.) When used thoughtfully, this scale routine can lead to not only increased fingering "vocabulary" and stamina, but to a more fluid sense of how one can approach the instrument. Also, very conscious body use when working on these scales can help to increase one's ease when playing the bass. DIsclaimer: While I have worked with many people who have studied directly with Francois, I am not, and do not claim to be a "Rabbath expert". I'm presenting the best way I've learned to approach the scale section of the book, but I'm happy to hear any tips from others with more direct experience. Nouvelle Technique de La Contrebasse Volume 3 is published by Alphonse Leduc Éditions Musicales, Paris. 0:23 Prereq's for diving into the Rabbath Scales 1:10 Explaining the different sections on the pages for each key of the major scales 2:17 Why to practice Rabbath scales 4:00 Three suggested scale routines for the Rabbath scales 5:40 Reasons for practicing double stops
