Gone are the days of hanging up seaweed and chanting ‘makahiki’ in hope the swell gods will produce the goods. With the internet and a plethora of sources available, there’s no better time to understand for yourself how waves are produced, when they’ll hit and where to go to score. Here Jay Reale gives some top tips on what to look out for: Groundswell (long period) versus windswell (short period) - different period swells produce different wave conditions The further away the swell is generated the longer the swell period - the longer period the wave the more powerful the waves will be Shorter period swell can find its way into nooks and crannies of coastline and produce peaky beachbreaks How you can read buoy information to determine swell height and period Find a buoy report in the area you live, and make a mental note of how that report affects your local spot Different seasons generally produce different swell directions Tides have a huge impact at how the surf can be at different spots Wind has a massive impact on waves too - offshore versus onshore How offshore and onshore conditions are created by heating/cooling disparities over the land and ocean For further tips, sign up for our newsletter here: http://eepurl.com/bfx1Jz If you want to learn to bodyboard check out our bodyboard school: https://bodyboard-school.com Or if you fancy going on a trip, visit Bodyboard Holidays: https://bodyboard-holidays.com
