As patients are examined with MRI or X-Rays and diagnosed with an abnormal kyphosis or lordosis, what is being examined is the normal range of spinal curvatures. The existence of spinal curvatures is important to evenly distribute mechanical stress in the body, improve flexibility and strength. This makes the spine adapt better to gravitational stress and increased curvatures over time. When looking at a side view of the spine, you will see a normal backward bending curvature and forward bending curvature. Depending on the area of the spine, these curvatures will be expected or not. The cervical spine (neck area) should have a lordosis, the thoracic spine a kyphosis (mid-back), and the lumbar spine a lordosis (low-back). These curves remain normal as long as they stay within the expected range. There might be some exceptions due to certain patients' shapes and body types. Patients will start to develop symptoms at a decreased lumbar lordosis of 20 degrees, 10 degrees, or a complete lack of lordosis of the lumbar spine. The same is true if the patient begins to get an increased lordosis. They will experience symptoms and will start to have discomfort. The most common symptom will be pain. What are common known causes for loss of lumbar lordosis? 1. Spinal fusion (Harrington Rods scoliosis surgery) 2. Trauma and injury 3. Ankylosing spondylitis The best approach is always to protect normal spinal curvatures to avoid lumbar lordosis. Get evaluated properly, perform spinal alignment rehabilitation exercises, have an ergonomic space if you must work seated for long periods, and do things to promote a healthy lumbar lordosis. At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we aim to maintain the normal sagittal views of the spine by addressing scoliosis and all other spinal shifts out of the traditional alignment. This gives our patients the best possible prognosis and outcome when dealing with symptoms of abnormal spinal alignment.
