Lions Head Maple Air layer Fail and Redo Lions Head Japanese Maple Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira' When I didn't see roots in my air layer from last year, I wanted to investigate and find out why. I think in general I am cutting too small a gap when preparing my air layers. I think I have done a good job of scraping off the cambium layer, but with too small a gap I think the tree is able to recover and rejoin the layer before the roots had a chance to really take off. Ultimately I intend to propagate several of these for use as bonsai. I had a few other failures last year on this tree including one that just snapped off wile I was getting it ready. Shishigashira so far has been my most difficult subject. - My channel is mostly Bonsai related, but I make no promises. I like to make videos about air-layering, wiring for bonsai, pruning, growing seeds, and well... anything I find interesting. I am documenting my bonsai progress on YouTube to share what I am up to with my friends and family, to document the progress of the trees so I can look back at them over the years, and maybe show others that bonsai is something that anyone can get started with since really all you need is a tree (or a seed!) and some patience. I've always grown trees in pots; ever since I was a little kid growing apple seeds in elementary school. I think bonsai is a great way to keep interesting species at home without having a lot of space. One of my favorite families of trees are maples, but I'm getting into all sorts of other trees as well. Fruit trees and flowering trees are also super interesting to me, and if it has seeds, I want to try and grow it!
