The Orkney Islands hold some of the world's best preserved evidence of neolithic settlements, and we're looking at some of them this week. We visit Skara Brae, unearthed by a storm in 1850, containing precious artefacts shedding light on how people lived on the islands 5,000 years ago. Next up, we explore the ritual behaviour of the ancient island people, as we discover the folklore and purposes of the Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness. In order to look at the next neolithic... thing... on our itinerary, we have to take the world's shortest commercial flight, between Westray and Papa Westray, to visit the Knap of Howar. Having seen how these ancient people lived, we then find out ultimately where they ended up, exploring the Unstan burial chamber, and the fascinating Dwarfie Stone on the island of Hoy. ---- We're Stephen and Claire.
